The human memory is a function of the brain that results of connections established between neurons. These neurons are responsible for remembering or setting facts about past experiences and knowledge in humans. Continue reading →

Remembering is possible after having had the perception of something, some input through the senses, and it has several phases; in the same way that understanding, that is related with a good observance, through the senses and to have the opportunity to understand the received information.

Fixing the information is another step that is possible through repetition. It is not possible to remember something that was not fixed before. In order to keep a memory of things that were previously fixed, that person should have developed a lot of concentration and training.

When we evoke a knowledge, it means that we put that information in a space of consciousness, in a place of stored knowledges. Recognizing knowledges means to put in relation a new knowledge with a previous one that was evoked.

Sources for improving memory

In order to improve our memorizing capacity it is important to have a better perception, and to reach this it is necessary for all senses to be alert and concentrated at one moment to set and fix that knowledge. The training of observation, and the practice to get details that are not always evident, are both very useful to improve memory. It has been proven that people can retain concepts or knowledges that are classified as a part of a group, that is why it is better to make classifications.

Thinking in images is also useful, because imagination and thoughts are joined in that way. Besides, we have to think that a language code is taken from two perspectives: meaning and significant. In other words, we see an image of the object and afterwards we name it with words. Exaggerating the characteristics of the elements in a cartoon style is also useful in order to capture the novelty of something, and to give movement to the thought images as films.

It is important to avoid mechanic memorizing, it is better to fix contents using repetitions. Making pauses when we read or study is also useful to remember things that have been thought, and it is better to set contents.

When we learn something just before going to sleep, we will surely make it possible to retain it and remember it the next morning, because while we sleep here is no interference. Making a review of the studied material using abstracts causes an increased number of repetitions and gives us the opportunity to have a better memorizing.

But, what causes us to forget knowledge? The main cause is less concentration than needed and not understanding the studied topic. Also, not making a good review, or making it late, or insufficient study with not too much reflection and effort.

The great development of new media, specifically the Internet as a study tool, has made it evident that it is possible to give a positive use to it. Besides, Internet is today a fundamental mechanism in order to get a better communication and to be in contact with several academic centers in the world. Continue reading →

The several uses of the Internet

One of the greatest advances, thanks to the digital tools, is long distance education. The possibility to get access to a computer, opens new possibilities for people with less opportunities to take on personal studies, no matter if it is caused by long distances or difficult schedules.

Another branch that has greatly developed is the one associated to online files. Nowadays, more libraries open their files to the public, researchers and professionals of all areas have the same opportunity to publish the results of their work so they can be consulted by other specialists. In other words, if it is usually necessary to differentiate between what is really useful, the truth is that nowadays online work is almost essential.

The United Nations Development Programme

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is an organization that searches for alternatives of human development. It develops actions and activities in coordination with organizations like the United Nations Organization. In the same context, the UNDP has made an agreement with the University of Catalunya and the UOC with the objective of promoting virtual education in all the Latin-American zone.
Alternatives to this

The plan is to promote certain free software, and to impulse work and investigation on the Web. The main idea is to deliver developed technology from University of Catalunya to Latin-American and Caribbean countries, considering it has gotten good results in their original study centers.
The virtual school

Rebeca Grynspan, a distinguished member of the UNDP is also president of the council of government of the Virtual School. She has told the media that it is, from her point of view, a fundamental priority to make distances shorter, as well as the digital separation, among Latin-American countries. Nowadays, that virtual school develops study programs that directs its uses in democratic governments and human development.

Every student needs a health insurance plan. However, it is difficult to choose the good or the right one. Usually, due to lack of information, many students take those insurance plans recommended by their college or university. As Business Week found out in its edition this week, this is not always the best choice: often these “special-for-students-plans” reimburse only up to $ 30.000. A rare disease or a heavy accident can easily make you get some $100.000 in hospital and doctor bills. Continue reading →

So what is important to know when you choose your Student health insurance plan?

Colleges and Universities sometimes recommend health insurance plans which are the best for them financially but not always for students (sometimes you get much a better deal for the same premium on your own)

Be careful with low maximums as rare diseases or heavy accidents may be very expensive (less than $ 100.000 is a bad deal)

Pay attention to the caps on coverage for particular bills (ex.: $2000 per day cap for room, board etc.)

Look at the percentage premiums returned to customers vs. Profits and administrative costs. Anything below 75% returned is a bad deal.

Make sure that major illnesses as cancer or appendicitis are covered

Sometimes it is better to choose plans with higher deductibles, but covering much more

Business Week says that some Insurance plans only had benefits ratios of 42.6 % (in spring 2008), in previous semesters, benefits ratios were as low as 10.2 % – making student health insurance a gold mine for Insurance companies and a bad deal for students.

The “bad examples” mentioned by Business Week:

Even with “major medical” coverage only 10 % of the bills are reimbursed

Maximum limits of only $30.000 or even $10.000 are unrealistically low

Private school or colleges forcing their students to bad deals

A Bone fracture creating a bill of $24.000 in 48 hours – but due to a $2.500 per day-cap, the insurance paid only a small part of it

That is why you have to be careful when you choose your health insurance plan. If ignore these facts, or if you don’t read the health care plan closely you can find yourself with huge debts in order to pay all the hospital and doctor bills. So please read the details of your health insurances closely and inform your friends and families about the risks.
