I would add one more thing – learning hieroglyphs greatly helps develop one’s memory. Before I started studying Japanese I had trouble remembering complicated technical drawings, and how do these work; afterwards it was pretty easy, as the system is actually quite similar! So if you are into engineering, it can be of great benefit to learn some Japanese.
